The Wedding Band
Written by archtop girl on Wednesday, 04 November 2009
The wedding band is traditionally a last resort for the unsuccessful and uninspired: who wants to churn out Come on Eileen or the hits from the Blues Brothers week in, week out in village halls, marquees and golf club function rooms? Young(ish) New York hipsters do, apparently: the NY Times found this lot, the Dexter Lake Club Band, and has pronounced them 'a band that actually rocks'. Time to reappraise? Is playing weddings any different in terms of artistic integrity than any other covers act, or set of, say, traditional tunes and well-worn folk songs? And you can't knock $8000-plus a gig, after all. Nice piece, nice insight. Nice Guild in this pic, too.
